What the change actually does is make sure the raid super-block on
disc is up-to-date before starting a recovery (rebuild-to-spare) pass
after a disc failure.

Presumably if you crash, or maybe even shut down, after a failure and
before the rebuild completes, the superblock may have stale data and
might confuse things.  However I haven't thought through all the
possible scenarios to figure out what the critical situation is.
