PULSEAUDIO and ALSA cooperation problem - Failed to find a working profile

Dear subscribers,

My name is Przemek Gajos and I am an entry-level device drivers writer. I am also new to PULSEAUDIO discussion list so please forgive probable mistakes in posting this message.

I recently wrote my first ALSA audio capture driver. It works 'on its own' but fails to cooperate with PULSEAUDIO and I would like to fix that. It looks like where it fails where PULSEAUDIO queries some capabilities from ALSA:

przemek-12 pulseaudio[1991]: [pulseaudio] module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile.
przemek-12 pulseaudio[1991]: [pulseaudio] module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="9" name="9" card_name="alsa_card.9" namereg_fail=false tsched=yes ignore_dB=no deferred_volume=yes card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed.

My ALSA driver is still lacking some elements, for example mixer element is not included, and I presume it may be the reason for the error messages. From your experience, do you know if mixer element is necessary for PULSEAUDIO to query ALSA for working profiles or would there be another reason for the above failure.
I am now going to debug it by using PULSEAUDIO built from source but I will appreciate your hints.

Kind regards,
Przemek Gajos
