Can you make sure no pulseaudio processes are running (keep killing them until they die!), then run: "pulseaudio --start" This should start PA in the background and give you control back to your shell. From what we've seen so far, it might be that it "sticks" and does not give you your shell back. 2. If it does give you control back, can you repreat the test Tanu originally suggested with the PULSE_LOG=99 pactl info to see if it works now? 3. Can you outline any "special" properties your homedir might have? e.g. is it a "strange" filesystem, mounted over NFS or anything else of that ilk?
