PulseAudio does it's own mixing and it's not really configurable. You
can run PA on top of dmix but there is virtually no benefit and lots of
drawbacks (like breaking any kind of timer-based scheduling and adding
unnecessary overhead).

Resampling is a different story, but you didn't ask about that :D
