PJ/Alsa uses 8 channels on sound device, but must use only 1

It looks like I have everybody stumped.

Does ANYBODY use ALSA with pjmumble, and take only 1 audio channel of the hw device?

PJ/Alsa uses 8 channels on my sound device, but it must use only 1, as the other channels are dedicated to other programs and their operations.

I'm still wondering if this "grab all 8 channels" is by design in pjsip.
The other 7 programs share the other 7 channels without trouble.
PJSIP insists on grabbing all 8.
We (the 8 programs) use the same alsa library and the same /etc/asound.conf.

Is there a known cause/remedy for this behavior?

I thinking I wish set_snd_dev took a string instead of an integer, so dev/channel could be specified as
set_snd_dev("0.0","0.0")
instructing use of only the first channel on the first hardware device.

Any ideas where to look?
