Again this may already be fixed, I'm using the most recent version before Shane branched it. Man I wish I could figure out how to access the ZEND_ENGINE_1 branch that shane mentioned.
The exact command line you need is in the email message.
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.php.net:/respository -r ZEND_ENGINE_1 -d pear4 pear
