problem solved...don't know how!

(1) successfully installed oci8 1.3.5 (thanks)

               I wiah oci8 were updated by yum

(2) had to renew my 11g1 Oracle password since it would expire in 4 days.
      I had to : alter user (and had it backward the first time)

(3) bingo!!!  it started working with the new password

Whew!
