php problem

I am new to php and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I have a file named test.php containing:

<html>
<head>
<title> PHP Test </title>
</head>
<body>
<p>This is an HTML line
<p>
<?php
   echo "This is a PHP line";
   phpinfo();
?>
</body>
</html>

The html lines show up just fine but none of the php info is displayed. Any ideas?
