Well, if you consider SQL as "arcane crap" for freaks, your best option seems to abort your career as a programmer right now. The majority of us deem SQL to be a good and powerful language, MySQL a very nice implementation thereof, and the MySQL manual well written and example-rich. About people "giving you a break", you need not worry about that now.
