What, specifically, are you trying to do with the layer? If you need to refresh content, you can submit to PHP_SELF and things will reload. If you can't allow a full refresh, try using a duplicate of the original layer with added space for the submitted information. The submit action for your form can also specify a SHOW/HIDE LAYER action to swap the visibility of the two layers. What this has to do with databases, I don't know.
