Your best bet is to use crontab. There are a number of tutorials on how to use cron_tab on the internet. I run custom php scripts in crontab to selectively back-up certain tables at different intervals and e-mail me the back-up files as an attachment. Data that is not often changed in tables I back-up daily, weekly, or monthly.
