No problem, I don't think there's any barrier to tiers, but one thing I've
learned dealing with programmers is that if I use language loosely that to
them represents a term of art, they jump all over me! 

I don't see any conflict between tier-based architecture and the use of PHP.
It's just a tool.

Sorry Madam but I am programming for over 14 years now.

I was a pro at C in 1993, but I change with times

So I switched to Foxpro and then VB. 

.Net is a goner. PHP is good for AJAX.

Now I am taking a very difficult Quantum Jump into Linux, 

I was worried if Tiers are alien to PHP.
