Just to clarify things a bit... First of all the directory you want to create the file in must exist. The directory must also have write permission set for the current user. chmod setting 777 sets ALL permissions on for everybody. So, if you need to use it at any time, make sure that you remove any unnecessary execute and write permissions when you have finished updating the directory The same applies to files that you have created. chmod allows you to determine who can read, write and/or execute the file.
