Actually Fatih, I have also been playing around with the PEAR mimemail option and have just got that to work, so will not be pursuing this problem any further, but thank you very much for the time you spent helping me.

That is a space between the two sets of \r\n's.  I tried it without any
spaces and still got the same result.

Would it be better if I post the code that creates the headers?
I avoided doing that first as I was wondering if I got the headers
themselves correct?

I guess it is better to see your code. that creates the headers and body
parts too.
