Hi Alex,

If you're processing a large number of files, the bottleneck could just as likely be the hard drive read/write and not so much PHP. And what's a large number of files? 50? 100? 1000? 1000000? Remember, PHP internal functions are usually wrappers around compiled C code... the shuffling around in the PHP engine itself can be quite tiny.
