Are you doing phpinfo() off the CLI or via apache mod? Is it the same way you are running the actual script that's calling on mysqli?

http://php.net/manual/en/class.mysqli.php definitely says MySQLi is a class.
It looks like PHP was complied without MySQLi support. Does running a phpinfo() show the MySQLi module?

Try adodb lib for php ( http://adodb.sourceforge.net/ ), is great layer on top of php db functions.
