Personally, I'd just use regex to do it. Something like preg_replace('#<p[^>]*?>\s*</p>#m', '', $html) should do it.

Otherwise, you've got trim($pars[$i]->plaintext == "") instead of trim($pars[$i]->plaintext) == "".
