I think he doe not get any connections because
ifx_connect("...", $user, $pass)
REQUIRE ALL parameters and if $_SERVER['HTTP_USER'] is empty...
If he use
ifx_connect("...", "$user", "$pass")
then it is passed as EMPTY string to the database and the database
connection is there but terminated because an EMPTY user string.
