The 160 byte limit is carrier/handset dependent, and goes as low as 140 for some Canadian carriers. The cell phone companies are happy to provision you with a gateway account, if you can prove you are not a cell-spammer and will pay them money. If not, you are at the mercy of free systems designed for casual limited use by end users, and abusing that with a PHP script that could send lots of messages would be a very Bad Idea -- They'll just block you as soon as you get going. The core gear is owned by the phone companies. They're not interested in providing free spammer access wide open to the general public for some reason...
