If the OP knows that his code is maybe gonna break, depending on which
way the wind blows, he should just roll out the patch NOW rather than
waiting around for PHP 6 to be released and break all his code...

It really doesn't sound like a huge hairy change to me for the DB
class to be re-written as completely static or completely not static,
frankly.
