At least my email client (The Bat!) can't sort messages in chains with Re-like subject. So I believe for most of us two different styles at a time are not convenient.
99% of the time it's the email program doing it and nobody is consciously changing it or even taking notice of what happens to the subject.
While it's annoying I think it's going to be one of those things you have to live with.
