I don't have any idea what went wrong because I compiled php > 5.1.6 with the same options as php 5.0.6. I know there was discussion and a patch submitted for allowing version specific php.ini files for PHP5. I don't know if that's what got you, but I'd check the bug list and if you don't find a match, perhaps submit a bug report.
