Clean up crappy input, of course. Convert perfectly-valid NEWLINE into a tag <BR> for browser output, no. The conversion of the data for OUTPUT to a specific medium (browser, RSS, XML, WAP, FUTURE TECH #1*) should be done on OUTPUT, not INPUT. Othewise, to convert your input plain -> HTML data to WAP, you first have to UNDO the plain -> HTML conversion, then do a plain -> WAP conversion.
