When you say that it is not working properly, what exactly is the problem? Are you getting any error messages? What version of PHP are you using? What platform is PHP installed on? The reason I ask those questions is that http://us2.php.net/manual/en/ref.mcrypt.php states that the mcrypt functions need the mcrypt libraries to work. Perhaps the reason your functions are not working is because those libraries are not installed on your system. Of course, you could just use Barry's suggestion of using the session since it seems to meet your end goals.
