If you're gonna allow the <i> tag then just allow it. There's no point in allowing something else just to spend CPU cycles converting it to what you could have allowed in the first place.
I completely agree. I think you'll find that, when pressed, no one can really provide a good reason to use BBCode. I often see security cited as a reason, but it makes no sense.
