I have used CVS before (since its available in Zend Studio) and have had to do a bit of reconfiguring of Zend (because I refuse to connect using pserver, and the CVS-over-SSH instructions at Zend didn't work for me).
You can get other CVS clients installed and use them for checkin/checkout and then edit the files in your favorite editor (if it is not cvs-enabled).
