We started a new server at work. The hosting company was supposed to put PHP 5 on it, but did 4 instead. I would like to upgrade it before it goes into service, but the instructions in the PHP5 tarball look difficult. I'm not familiar with the "emerge". The server is Linux RH9 with Apache 2.0.
