I don’t see why older versions of the catalog would be needed, except as a backup. I usually save the most recent previous one, but delete the older versions to save space. There is also the catalog backup that is created automagically or on-demand for the current version.

Lightroom sometimes makes a completely new catalog along with previews, etc. when it updates. These can get quite chunky.

I’m cleaning up some hard drives and would like to gain the space.
