using docked drives for fast access?

Hello all.

Does anyone have experience, positive and/or negative, about using docked external drives as working hard drives?

I have a Mac Pro tower with four internal bays, all taken.

I’d like to have one more external drive constantly connected to my computer for easy and fast access. I would back this up to a second drive in the dock.

I have done some investigating of drive dock stations and am curious if anyone uses them as always accessible drives? Any pros or cons I should be aware of?
