Dirt and finger prints can make a difference in sharpness depending on the lens type and design. Most normal type lenses put the dirt on the front lens too far out of the depth of field. Perhaps dirt on the rear element is closer to being focused. Flat field lenses , macro and enlarger lens are where the dust and finger prints make a difference. Kodak had an example in one of its booklets in the 1970's that showed a print thru a clean lens and a print thru a finger printed lens. The difference was quite visible
