Yes, but if you installed the memory right, you can use 8GB.

Not all the Gb are going to PS.  Try to see in the preferences if there is a definition or limitation to the amount of memory PS can use.

My system is Win 7 pro.... I just installed my already owned PS CS3

Pini, you mean that PS will not see the extra RAM unless it is a 64bit one? which CS3 isn't?

This is true only if you need/want the new features of the newest version.

I’ve tried the PSCC version several times and I just don’t like the interface.

I do use the CC version of Lightroom and use it for my personal work. It updates with some regularity.

The really bd news is that if you’re not using CS6 or CC, you’re not getting the full power of PS.

If I'm not mistaken, the only upgrade at this point is the new PS which is now an annual service fee. Gone are the days when PS was just a program to be purchased or upgraded. I think Lightroom isn't a for-fee service.

I still use CS2 which works just fine and meets my needs. I have made a significant investment in CS2, purchasing books and tutorials. I have also collected numerous articles and tips. I can't see a need to start all over.

So..... I recently installed a SSD disk where I migrated my OS and installed PS CS3.

I also added 8Gb RAM to the initial 4Gb, but now thta I tried to set the preferences in PS, it anly sees the first 4Gb chip.

Any clues?

Time to update your very ancient photoshop.
