In Windows, you have to use the 64 bit system / software in order to get benefit from memory larger than 8Gb.

XP doesn't have 64.

I also use PSCS3 (I have newer versions but I don't like the interface).

 

I upgraded my monitor last year and had to upgrade my video card in order for it to work with my system. 

 

Also, some computers, Mac for sure, require that RAM be installed in pairs. You might look at that to see if it helps with your problem.

So..... I recently installed a SSD disk where I migrated my OS and installed PS CS3.

 

I also added 8Gb RAM to the initial 4Gb, but now thta I tried to set the preferences in PS, it anly sees the first 4Gb chip.
