Interesting, Stephen. I am well acquainted with USB cables, and ports, failing. Since my cable is not replaceable, except by a repairman which is not practical, it doesn't solve my problem. Thanks for the info, though.

Don,

USB (at least through USB 3) uses 4 conductors, 2 for power and 2 for communications. If you look at the flat (USB-A) plug that is the PC end for nearly all USB cables, and picture it as the four fingers of your hand, your pointer and the pinkie are the power conductors, your middle and ring fingers are the communications conductors. All other USB plugs (USB-B, mini, and micro) use the same four conductors and wrap them into a smaller plug, like squishing your four fingers together.

It is possible to have damage occur to the wires such that just the power conductors fail, or just the communications conductors fail, just by having too tight of a kink in the cable at some point. Today, we are able to get "Stay Flat" USB cables that strive to avoid that hazard.

If that one fails, please try a new
  cable. On my
Bamboo at least, it's just a mobile
  'phone USB cable,
which are readily available (at least here
  in Oz). A bit
of quick work with a file or sharp knife to

I have a Wacom Bamboo "Pen and

                        CTH-470/K, with pen and multi-touch,
  and it works
happily with driver v5.3.3-3 on OSX
  Mavericks
                        v10.9.4.
Drivers here: https://www.wacom.asia/en/tablet-drivers?tid_1=9&tid=49 The same driver is also good for OSX
  10.6.8.
The driver on the above page may very
  well get you
                        going.
My (now rather old) Wacom Intuos 3,
  model PTZ-930,
with pen only, works with driver
  v6.3.8-2 on OSX
                        Mavericks v10.9.4.
