The ladies were part of a team to organize a party event and thought the tub could make a good accessory.  But this story falls under category 'If legend becomes fact, print the legend', because it went on in the courts for several years and changed colors in the press many times.  No shit.

Most of the stories eliminated the storage angle, but hearing that now reminds of me of one of my first museum gigs. I was hired by the Corcoran to go into their basement and shoot a large collection of marble sculpture. When I got to it, it was not as expected. There had been a heavy rainfall and the basement was flooded under two feet of sewer water and although it didn’t smell like it, it looked like shit. I waded around and shot the two dozen or so marble figures, souped the film, and found they were the basis for a big lawsuit. When they bought the negs, I knew something was gonna hit. It turned out they were in storage for the Remington or other sculptor’s estate.

As I recall, they did not hire the two ladies from Germany to do the cleaning.

It was two cleaning ladies scrubbing out a bathtub installation (= old tub filled with grease and plaster) that was in storage at a museum and on loan from a private owner.  They wanted to use the tub to clean dishes at an event of the Social Democrats.  The owner sued the museum and the town and eventually won. Don't think anything happened to the ladies.

At the time I was more into dealing with hormones and rock'n roll but I remember it to be the first time to really question where the "modern art world" was going...

Yeah, something about a cleaning lady removing a light brown stain the artist had carefully placed on a million dollar sculpture. I wonder where she is working these days?

Does anyone on this list remember the Joseph Beuys “bathtub scandal” from back in 1973?
