It’s about the pentaprism, as it is heavy and adds to the manufacturing cost rather significantly. There is also a patent for the instant return mirror which has to be paid for and the owner is Pentax.
I think the mirror less camera are about weight. I looked at the Sony
full frame A-850 when it came out. It was quite heavy compared to my Minolta
full frame film cameras. I have always shot with at least two ( sometimes three)
35mm film camera around my neck. Two A-850 bodies and lenses around my neck
seemed like too much weight.

Manufacturers put an awful lot into sales pitches, and humans are such
suckers, we bite down on all of it. It’s not about technology, it’s about
product sales.
