He needed the look settings?   He didn't know how to use exposure?   all those setting do is exposure compensation.  

How is raw saving you from needing proper gear though and people to hold reflectors?

Well that was his argument, but he was shooting under all possible conditions from the streets of Brasiliera to the farms of Alaska.  He also took "advantage" of all those non-pro settings like Night, Backlight, Cloudy etc. to create a starting point for the bias he wanted for each shot.

He had spent most of his life shooting E6, something which I struggled with for 10 years.

Too much forethought for my style.  Which film?  Which exposure compensation?  Polarizer or no?  So OK, now which camera body, or do we need to rewind and hunt down the correct film in the bag?  Find correct film, get camera on tripod, attach desired lens, choose correction filters, chase down someone to hold up reflectors, frame and focus.

Finally, half an hour later, the butterfly is gone and the shot with it.

Fergetit.  I'll shoot RAW any day, thanks.
