Summery. framing: what you do in camera to make image fit a given area usually but not always following rules of composition such as; brights and darks, area of focus and visual hierarchy.

Cropping: cutting into the framing.

I've learned a lot from the tidbits of information contained in this thread.  I still don't understand the difference between framing and cropping, but that's alright, I don't need to as I'm not an artist.  And, it seems that the protagonists may not either!  The referenced article on measuring focal length was fascinating as I can understand the math.  I never would have run across it either without this thread.  Also, Andy's aversion to strings and windows hadn't struck me as psychotic behavior until I read the part below.  But, the most fascinating thing has been the engagement that the list has provided.  The return of Art Faul is largely responsible, I believe.  Now to wrap it up, a summary or abstract as Yoram suggests, would be valuable and perhaps a keeper.

Best, Roger

Randy also revealed that enlarging an image may degrade it's quality and resolution.  Some may not have known that!  Andy also dropped in a post which seems to suggest he has a psychotic aversion to string.. or windows, not sure yet - I'll wait for the morning coffee to kick in.
