I don't know but I have had no trouble with CR2 files with Photoshop CS5.  There is a workaround though till you get it figured out.  Adobe has a converter that will convert the CR2 files to the Adobe DNG.  You still have the raw file, its open source so in a way I think its actually better for archiving and you are not stuck with no way to work till you figure it out.  They convert fairly quickly and you are on your way.   If you have problems getting a DNG to open with an Adobe product, its a bigger problem than you thought.

Frankly this time I would doubt its a Canon trick.  I would be more likely to guess there is a conflict somewhere in the software or operating system that is giving you fits.

I have a MacBook Pro with a legit version of Adobe Creatoive Suite CS4.
Just picked up a Canon S100 this summer, but Photoshop will not read the
.CR2 files. I installed ACR 5.3 according to the instructions provided
by Adobe...but it still won't work. Is this a dirty Canon trick where
your machine won't be allowed to view Canon files after having touched a
.NEF? Seems like a company that would do something evil like that.
