I have a 10-24mm lens and some extension rings, so yes, I would eventually end trying close range!

I really don't mind using a tripod. I do carry it around most of the time, so no problem. I was "expecting" (out of ignorance) shutter speeds of about 2 seconds or so. I don't mind 30 seconds, but I was counting on things not moving.
