I agree, I don't believe the keywords are embedded in the actual files nor do I believe they should be...nothing else is. But, I could be wrong.

And no, you don't want to keyword twice. You could ask me how I know that. Or you could just believe me.

I assume the keywords are embedded in each image file, not in some
remote database that Lightroom creates. If they're not, they sure
ought to be.

If they are, then LR will just reconstruct the keyword display when
you point it at the new drive.
