Interesting that you bring up Jan, Herschel! I was on his site myself last month to show a friend Jan's work on the Nevada Test Site. I always respected what Jan had to say, because he was, IMO, always able to back up what seemed to come from his ego, with what came from his hand and his eye. In other words, he always "put his money where his mouth was," and backed it up with results. Just as you, Louis (once active, now lurking) and many others on this list also do.

I  was reminded of a larger than life character that was often very vocal on this list. A man with more than the kind of ego it takes to survive in this business. I was just on his website and again, very impressed with the imagery.
May the road rise up to meet brother Jan.

I once had the opportunity to address the South African Institute of Professional Photographers. An audience of around 150. I asked them: "Who here believes he's the best photographer in this room?"

About 100 people raised their hands.
I said "That's impossible... I'm the best photographer in this room!"

But in many ways they were all correct. You have to believe in yourself to continue to go out there and sell your work.

I think the list has been somewhat quite because this time of the year, and unlike nature that rests during the winter, we are “resting” and preparing to come to life when the weather is more cooperative.

I read almost all comments, but don’t comment myself;  I think that is akin to laziness on my part{:->

I have been on the list for years and I remember many of the things you mention.  Mostly I study the submissions and comments so I can learn.

A couple weeks ago I submitted a photo to the gallery.  I never saw a comment on any of the submissions that week.

I hope that this list doesn't go away as the EOS list out of the Netherlands has.

I was thinking about the days when the list was very active with much comment and discussion.  So, I am wondering how many current members were here for the sometimes heated discussions on FIDO, DIDO etc. ?
Refresher:  talk about photographer "reveal" and formats, definitions and terminology.  Much of which is still basically unresolved.
