Hello from Hateruma Island, Japan

... there's been a robbery on Tapan: the deranged
artist-character has suffered the loss of a family heirloom,
and now! the extended family suspects the burglar is eating
in their cafe as there is paint on his sleeve (from the
break-in)... am letting my Vienna sausage dry-out down by
the breakwater so it will better stay on the hook: a little
white and yellow fish seemed to be very interested in it
today... little clusters of speedy small round? silver
things/fish? hover over the water and I saw what looked like
a vertical snake with fins 'hopping' across the water in
terrific bounds... other quick splashes and my fishing line
was snapped!... and lost one small gold Acme lure on the
rocks (should have just cut the line and tied it up on shore
and let the tide dislodge it)... no other action but a lot
of casting... noticed there were various seed-pods amongst
the flotsam (from Taiwan?)... and the floating refrigerator
hulk is making a break for the high seas; it will probably
never sink (unless it corrodes completely) with all that
insulation and metal casing... there's also a
floating/bobbing tennis racket... the Japanese angler came
by again today and probably uttered the same fishing remark
as before but this time he added another sentence and
repeated one word several times, which I'm guessing must be
akin to patience? (it's not in my phrasebook) he left his
gear at one point I had a look at his strange rig: a little
conical metal mesh container with lid and two very tiny
attached hooks (very mysterious: perhaps it's for catching
the 'walking snake')... it's also strange that the two
ferries come and go about the same time the big one, which
looks less seaworthy and toots its horn on arrival, must be
subsidized as it's often empty... or maybe they both are...
interesting to watch the passengers through my waterproof
binoculars (first time I've actually packed them they used
to be on my boat)... and the five p.m. tune can be heard
from two sets of loudspeakers, one close to shore and the
other probably near the sashimi shop, but it's a good few
seconds delayed from the closer one... the breakwater is 'L'
shaped so it takes several minutes to walk to the end of the
port, separated by rocks from Nishi Hama, then out along
both legs: a valuable view of most of the island, and you
can see boats coming from miles away across a flat expanse
of sea... a couple of very nice watercolours! (I'm beginning
to favour the old small frayed brush) -- may have said
'hello' to the girl at the breakwater (who spoke
English, telling me that there was a Canadian-Japanese couple
here) from Unit A across the way, but I'm not sure... I _did
talk with the Japanese wife who was carrying her hefty son
as I made my way home: they're from Victoria and may stay
until the end of the week or possibly month... just bought a
new (replacement, but different model) Olympus Stylus for
$20 delivered on eBay!... had a shower this morning then
struggled with the hair-trimmer; I may just begin growing a
ridge of long hair down in back... finished the 3kg bag of
rice! should have bought the larger/cheaper bag I guess;
adding the chopped vegetables to the rice as it's 'drying,'
kind of blanches them nicely...

Global Islands Project -- ongoing series of multi-media
pdf-ebooks/field-recordings -- a pastoral, pictorial and
phonic elicitation of island parameters. An intensive
examination of small islands and their paradigmatic
solutions to globalism.

Your (Art)world is based on mutual relief at your common
corruption. Maybe some cultures are based on even worse. But
that wouldn't change the bad faith of it and as years go by,
you wake at night in terror of your whole life being an act
of bad faith, where everything is self-interest and nothing
more, where every human interaction is driven by a silent,
even subconscious calculation of some ulterior motive, to
the point that a sea of bad faith has taken over your whole
life, there's no small island left from which you can even
try to build a bridge of good faith, because even that
effort becomes suspect, even good faith is nothing but
self-interested, even altruism is nothing but solipsistic,
even your professed agonizing right here right now is
nothing but a gesture, made to the conscience in order to
assure it that it exists.

You cannot politically defy the institutions when all you
really wanted was to be clasped to their bosoms and hope in
time to be cherished under the very framework of oppressive
values you are thinking of overcoming. That would be
co-optation, revolution only in the sense of a circulation
of elites rather than the extirpation of the very impulses
of elitism.
