Members' exhibit - 25 DEC 10 -- Roots

I have to say that this photo draws me back again and again.  Not only is it a nice photo, but I muse on how such a system developed.

Clearly, the roots must have formed when there was good soil covering.  So the changes in direction were due to the structure of the soil -- physical as well as chemical structure.

But with time the soil covering was removed.  And now, the roots determine the shape of the ground surface.

In other words (remember, we're sort of mostly academics here), the overall structure is shaped by mutual interaction of the underlying structure.

Pretty heavy concept, maybe, but it's a new year.  And maybe human civil-ization will recognize it rather than trying to force lives into straitjackets.

Thanks, Pini.  It seemed like a very Japanese scene to me.
