I really don't see what all of the uproar is. Cindy Sherman in some of her more grotesque works, Jock Sturges (previously mentioned), Joel Peter Witkin (in most everything that I've seen of his), Andreas Serrano (Piss Christ), and even Robert Mapplethorpe with his "in your face" homo-erotic images are more disturbing to me than the photograph that Mark posted. And yes, I do show the work of the aforementioned photographers to my college students and in 10 years haven't heard a single complaint yet. But all of these artists/photographers get us thinking and discussing the medium and contemplating exactly what art is on both personal and public levels. Gotta love those discussions!
