Hi Russ,

Have you tried the 'extract' tool, in filters, in PS? Haven't used CS4, but it's in CS1 - CS3 so I imagine it wont be much different for CS4. I've used it loads for cutting people out of a white background and putting them into other backgrounds, very effective. If you have trouble with it the 'help' menu gives fairly straightforward advice.
