Why is that sad?  How could journalistic photography be anything but
illustration designed to support the text? Why publish anything without
a point of view?  Bias is important to critical thought.

The sad thing is that the Times series hints that photographic "truth" was
subject to manipulation from the beginning, mostly driven by a desire to
make money or suit some editorial or political purpose.
