Digital Cameras

From time to time someone asks for recommendations on digital  
cameras.  For them and others, the July 2009 issue of Consumer Reports  
has an extensive review broken down by type of camera:  subcompact,  
compact, superzoom, basic SLRs and advanced SLRs. The last two were  
tested with a high-quality same brand 50 mm lens.   They don't include  
the professional models, so they don't go higher than the Nikon D300  
or the Canon 50D.  Don't expect the kind of detail you would find in  
DPreview (for example).  Their ratings are partially subjective.  For  
those unable to find the magazine, I'll be happy to summarize an  
individual ranking.  They may offer a trial on-line subscription at  
consumerreports.org.
