If you're asking about recharging batteries like the BP511you'd be better off carrying a couple extra charged batteries if backpacking unless you're going to be gone for a long time.  The two 6V lantern batteries,  you'd need two since the 511s are 7.4V  and you need more than that to charge the 511s,  and the charger would weigh a lot more and take up a lot more space than 2 or 3 511s.  An Energizer 6V lantern battery weighs 665grams and  H L W  is     15mm  X 68.2mm X 68.2mm while a 511 weighs 77Grams and H L W  is 20mm X 55mm X 38mm.

Then you have to take the charging logic into consideration.

When the lantern batteries are  depleted you toss them while the 511s get recharged.

Well just as an exercise in thinking out of the box, is there a product
out there where you can say take the battery out of say a Canon digital
SLR, where you can put the battery in the device and have it hooked to a
regular lantern type of battery and have it recharge the battery for
your camera. The big 6volt lantern batteries come to mind but maybe the
old 9 volt cells would work better. Yeah I know there are car chargers,
but what can you use to recharge when you away from both power and a
car. Be real handy on a back packing trip or say when working some
event where you might need to recharge one battery while using another.
Anyone know of such a product???
