I haven't read the full paper, but things that require design, tooling up and manufacture at the level of current silicon micro-electronics are relatively expensive - growing polymers is substantially cheaper - and then there's the scaling.  There seems real limits to the size of things where precision is required at that level - easy to make a 8.8mm sensor, harder to make a 36mm sensor .. and then there are more faulty units in the production that drive up the cost, harder still to make humungous sensors.

this system would be analogous to monochrome OLED screens - or silver film even.  What size do you want?  <cuts to size>

Teh supporting electronics would be no different though

but this is speculation as it's just an emerging discovery, whether it leads to a useful technology is anyones guess.. but no one will take it anywhere unless they know of it!
