Perhaps a better direction is to is to overlay many narrow spectrum as this gives a much sharper focus with the same optics and because of short exposures much better signal/noise ratios

I found vibration also a problem with longer exposures

I found this interesting http://www.art-si.org/PDFs/Acquisition/ICOM05_Berns_Camera.pdf and the clear glass version of the camera has forensic application

Dark frame exposure and/or digital image stacking works well for astrophotography. I have seen images from cumulative exposures several hours in length.
